Overview

History & significance

Aldborough Roman town is a Romano-British settlement located near Boroughbridge in North Yorkshire, occupying the site of the Roman fort and vicus of Isurium Brigantum. Established in the early second century AD as a military installation controlling the territory of the Brigantes tribe, it subsequently developed into a substantial civilian settlement serving as a local administrative and commercial centre. The town's defences were rebuilt and reinforced during the later Roman period, with archaeological evidence indicating occupation extending into the fourth century. Surviving structural remains include sections of the defensive ditch and fragmentary building foundations, whilst finds from systematic excavation and fieldwork have revealed the material culture of the Romano-British population that inhabited this important northern settlement.
