Overview

History & significance

Aldborough Roman town is a scheduled ancient monument in North Yorkshire that preserves the remains of Isurium Brigantum, a Romano-British settlement established in the first century AD as a fort and subsequent civilian settlement. The site occupies approximately 22 acres and represents one of the most significant urban centres in Roman Britain north of the Midlands, serving as the tribal capital of the Brigantes. Substantial stone walls, dating to the second and third centuries AD, still define the town's perimeter in places, and excavation has revealed evidence of public buildings, domestic structures, and commercial activity spanning the Roman occupation. The monument fell into decline following the end of Roman rule in the early fifth century and was subsequently abandoned, though medieval and later settlements developed nearby, obscuring but not destroying the archaeological record.
