Antonine Wall and fortlet, 950m W to 335m ENE of Cleddens, is a section of the Antonine Wall with an associated fortlet, a stone-built frontier defence system constructed by the Roman Empire in the second century AD. The wall, built under the direction of the Roman governor Antoninus Pius around 142 AD, stretched approximately 37 miles across central Scotland from the Firth of Clyde to the Firth of Forth, serving as the northernmost frontier of Roman Britain. The fortlet at this location represents one of numerous small military installations positioned along the wall's length to support garrison forces and control movement across the frontier. The remains preserve evidence of Roman military infrastructure and engineering practice during the period of maximum northern expansion in Britain, demonstrating the strategic importance placed on the control of lowland Scotland during the second century AD.
