Antonine Wall, field boundary south of Boclair to Crow Hill, is a section of the Roman defensive frontier that extended across central Scotland from the Firth of Forth to the Firth of Clyde in the second century AD. This portion of the wall survives as a field boundary in Stirlingshire, preserving the line of the fortification across the Clackmannan Group bedrock that underlies the landscape. The wall itself comprises a stone foundation approximately 4.3 metres wide, supporting a timber palisade and fronted by a substantial ditch, constructed by the Roman military as part of their northern frontier strategy.
The surviving earthwork demonstrates the engineering adaptation required to construct across varied terrain, with the ditch and rampart visible as linear features across open ground. The Clackmannan Group sedimentary rocks beneath the site provided both building materials and challenges to Roman engineers. The section is scheduled as a monument of national importance under Historic Environment Scotland reference SM7480, protecting this critical evidence of Roman occupation and military organisation in northern Britain during the Antonine period.
