The Antonine Wall, Summerston to River Kelvin, is a section of the turf-built Roman frontier that stretched across central Scotland between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde during the second century AD. Constructed under the direction of the Roman governor Antoninus Pius between approximately 142 and 160 AD, this portion of the wall represents the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire at its greatest extent. The monument survives as an earthwork comprising a substantial ditch and rampart, though reduced in height from its original state by erosion and cultivation over nearly two thousand years. This section is among the best-preserved stretches of the wall and forms part of the Antonine Wall World Heritage Site, designated in recognition of its archaeological significance as evidence of Roman military engineering and imperial administration in Britain.
