Overview

History & significance

Moxby Priory is a ruined Augustinian nunnery situated in North Yorkshire, England, founded in the twelfth century as a house for canonesses regular. The priory complex included conventional buildings arranged around a cloister, together with ancillary structures such as a mill that served the community's practical needs. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the sixteenth century, the site was repurposed; post-Dissolution occupation and garden features subsequently developed within and around the abandoned priory grounds, reflecting the changing uses of the former religious landscape. The surviving masonry and archaeological remains preserve evidence of both the medieval religious establishment and the subsequent secular adaptation of this Yorkshire monument.
