Avebury henge and stone circles is a Neolithic monument complex located in Wiltshire and dates to approximately 2500 BCE, making it contemporary with or slightly later than Stonehenge. The site comprises a substantial circular earthwork bank and ditch enclosing an area of some 28 acres, within which stand multiple circles of sarsen stones arranged in both outer and inner configurations. The scale and architectural ambition of Avebury represents one of the most impressive examples of Neolithic ceremonial engineering in Britain, though many of its stones were deliberately destroyed or buried during the medieval and post-medieval periods. The surviving monument demonstrates the sophistication of Neolithic communities in southern Britain and their capacity for large-scale communal works, though the precise religious or ceremonial functions of the site remain subject to scholarly interpretation.
