Aveline's Hole is a Palaeolithic cave site located in Burrington Combe, Somerset, which contains evidence of human occupation dating to the late Upper Palaeolithic period, approximately eleven thousand years ago. The cave was discovered and excavated in the nineteenth century, yielding finds including flint tools and animal bone, which established its significance as one of the earliest known sites of human habitation in Britain. The cave opening is situated within the limestone cliffs of the Mendip Hills, and the site retains its archaeological importance as a key location for understanding the material culture and subsistence practices of post-glacial hunter-gatherer communities in the British Isles.
