Axholme Carthusian Priory is a medieval monastery founded in the late fourteenth century on the Isle of Axholme in north Lincolnshire. The priory was established by the Carthusian order, followers of a strict contemplative rule, and operated until its dissolution in 1539 during Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries. The site at Melwood Park preserves substantial earthworks indicating both the monastic layout and post-Dissolution garden features, reflecting the transformation of the landscape following the priory's abandonment. These archaeological remains, which include platforms, banks, and ditches, document the physical footprint of religious community life and the subsequent reuse of the monastic precinct by its new secular owners.
