Overview

History & significance

Badger Fall is an ancient still located 150 metres south-southeast of Glen Affric in Inverness-shire, Scotland. The site represents evidence of illicit whisky distillation, a practice widespread in the Scottish Highlands during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when excise duties made legal production economically unviable for many communities. Such stills were typically concealed in remote glens and mountain locations to evade detection by revenue officers, and their physical remains often comprise stone-built structures designed to heat and condense alcohol vapour. The survival of this site contributes to the archaeological record of Highland economic and social history during a period of significant fiscal tension between central authority and rural producers.
