Overview

History & significance

Balmerino Abbey is a Cistercian monastery founded in 1227 by Alexander II of Scotland and the Earl of Fife on the banks of the River Tay in Fife. The abbey was established as a daughter house of Melrose Abbey and became one of the principal religious foundations in eastern Scotland, playing a significant role in medieval ecclesiastical and economic life. The surviving ruins comprise substantial remains of the abbey church and conventual buildings, dating principally to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, though the site was occupied until the Scottish Reformation in the sixteenth century. The fragmentary stone structures that remain, set within a wooded estate, preserve evidence of the abbey's architectural development and its importance as a seat of Cistercian spirituality and landed wealth in medieval Fife.
