Overview

History & significance

Barnard Castle is a substantial Norman castle founded in the late eleventh century by Bertrand de Balliol on a prominent site overlooking the River Teesdale in County Durham. The castle comprises a ringwork with a shell keep, along with associated structures including a chapel and dovecote, representing an important example of early Norman fortification in the North of England. The cylindrical shell keep, built of stone, encloses the summit of the motte and exemplifies the development of stone fortification in the twelfth century. As a strategically positioned frontier stronghold, Barnard Castle played a significant role in the border territories during the medieval period and remains one of the most substantial castle ruins in the region.
