History & significance

The base slab of a medieval wayside cross is a standing stone monument located 110 metres west of the Merry Maidens stone circle in Cornwall, England. The monument consists of a substantial stone slab that formed the foundation of a cross, typical of the wayside crosses erected during the medieval period throughout Cornwall and other parts of south-west England. Such crosses served important functions as waymarkers, territorial markers, and sites of religious or community significance along routes connecting settlements and parish centres. The slab represents the surviving physical evidence of medieval religious practice and landscape organisation in this part of Cornwall, though the cross shaft and head are no longer extant.
