Overview

History & significance

Bath City Walls is a scheduled ancient monument comprising the surviving defensive fortifications of the Roman city of Aquae Sulis. The walls, constructed in the late second century AD and subsequently maintained and modified through the medieval period, originally enclosed an area of approximately six hectares and included multiple gates and towers. The surviving sections, which are most substantial on the north and east sides of the modern city centre, retain evidence of their Roman construction technique including stone masonry and surviving portions of the original defensive circuit. The monument represents a significant example of Romano-British urban fortification and continues to define the historical topography of Bath, with medieval and later building development having been substantially constrained by the course of the original Roman defences.
