Overview

History & significance

Bath City Walls is a scheduled ancient monument comprising substantial remains of the defensive fortifications that surrounded the Roman town of Aquae Sulis from the late second century AD onwards. The walls, constructed of local stone and measuring approximately two metres in thickness, originally enclosed an area of some fourteen acres and included at least one major gate. Parts of the circuit remain visible today, particularly on the eastern and southern sides of the historic city centre, and archaeological investigation has revealed evidence of periodic rebuilding and maintenance throughout the Roman period and into the medieval era. The walls represent a significant example of Romano-British urban defences and remain a key source of evidence for understanding Bath's strategic importance and urban development from the Roman occupation through to the post-Roman period.
