Berry Pomeroy Castle is a defended residence of medieval and Tudor date situated near Totnes in Devon. The castle originated in the early fourteenth century as a fortified manor house built by the Pomeroy family, whose name it retains, and underwent significant expansion and remodelling during the Tudor period when it served as a substantial manorial residence. The ruins visible today display characteristics of both medieval and sixteenth-century construction, with remains of stone walls, towers, and domestic structures that reflect its evolving role from fortified stronghold to prestigious family seat. The site has been in the care of English Heritage since 1982 and remains an important example of the transition between medieval castle architecture and the more domestically oriented mansions of the early modern period.
