Berry Pomeroy Castle is a defended residence situated near Totnes in Devon, England, comprising both medieval fortifications and later Tudor domestic additions. The castle originated as a Norman motte-and-bailey fortress established in the twelfth century by the Pomeroy family, whose name it retains, before being substantially rebuilt and expanded during the sixteenth century when it was developed into a more comfortable Tudor mansion. The site preserves remains of the medieval earthwork defences alongside later stone structures, reflecting successive phases of occupation and architectural evolution across several centuries. The castle was abandoned in the seventeenth century and subsequently fell into decay, leaving the ruins that survive today as a testament to the changing nature of aristocratic domestic architecture in the Southwest.
