Overview

History & significance

Bersham Ironworks is a post-medieval and early modern industrial iron-casting facility located in Denbighshire, Wales, which operated as a significant centre of iron production from the eighteenth century onwards. The works were established to exploit local coal and iron ore deposits, becoming an important component of north Wales's industrial economy during the period of rapid expansion in metal manufacturing. The site retains substantial remains of blast furnaces, casting pits, and associated industrial structures that exemplify the technological and spatial arrangements characteristic of period ironworks. Bersham was eventually superseded by larger industrial concerns, though its physical fabric preserves evidence of the metallurgical techniques and workforce organisation that underpinned eighteenth and nineteenth-century Welsh iron production.
