Overview

History & significance

Bindon Abbey is a Cistercian monastery founded in the twelfth century in the parish of Wool, near the River Frome in Dorset. The abbey was established around 1172 by the Benedictines before converting to the Cistercian order, and it flourished as a significant religious and economic centre throughout the medieval period until its dissolution in 1539. The site preserves substantial remains of the abbey church and domestic buildings, including fragments of the refectory and cloister, which attest to its former architectural importance and monastic layout. Bindon held considerable landholdings across Dorset and accumulated wealth through pastoral agriculture and tidal mills, making it one of the more prosperous Cistercian houses in the south-west.
