Overview

History & significance

Binham Priory is a Benedictine monastic foundation established in Norfolk during the early Norman period, likely founded in the late eleventh century as a daughter house of St Albans Abbey. The surviving ruins comprise a substantial flint-built church with notable Early English Gothic architectural features, particularly evident in the west front, which displays a distinctive early pointed arch design characteristic of the late twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The priory remained in operation until the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII in the 1530s, after which the site gradually fell into disrepair. Today the ruins, managed as a scheduled ancient monument, retain sufficient structural integrity to illustrate the scale and quality of a significant medieval Benedictine house, with the church remains forming the most substantial element of the former monastic complex.
