Overview

History & significance

Binham Priory is a Benedictine priory founded in the late eleventh century in Norfolk, England. The surviving remains include the substantial west front of the priory church, which retains one of the earliest examples of Decorated Gothic architecture in England, dating to the early fourteenth century. The priory was a daughter house of the Norman abbey of Saint-Saëns in Normandy and remained an active religious community until its dissolution during the Reformation. The standing masonry of the church front, with its distinctive window tracery and architectural detail, represents a significant example of medieval ecclesiastical building and demonstrates the wealth and status of the foundation during the height of the medieval period.
