Bishop's House is a seventeenth-century residential structure within a bawn fortification located in Carrickfergus, County Antrim. The bawn, a defensive enclosure characteristic of early modern plantation settlement in Ulster, dates from the post-medieval period and reflects the defensive requirements of the established Protestant clergy during the early decades of Irish plantation. The house itself served as a residence for the bishop, combining domestic accommodation with the protective advantages afforded by the surrounding fortified walls. The site represents an important example of ecclesiastical settlement architecture during the period of English and Scottish colonial expansion in Ulster in the seventeenth century.
