Bog head rath and souterrain is an Early Christian enclosed settlement and underground chamber situated in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The site comprises a rath, a characteristic Irish ringfort of the Early Christian period, together with an associated souterrain, a subterranean passage or chamber that typically served defensive, storage, or ritual functions. Raths of this type date predominantly from the Early Christian centuries, roughly the fifth through twelfth centuries, and represent the most common form of domestic and defensive settlement among the rural population of Early Medieval Ireland. The combination of rath and souterrain at Bog head reflects settlement practices typical of the period and region, wherein such underground structures complemented the fortified domestic enclosure above ground.
