Overview

History & significance

The bomb damaged remains of St Catherine's Almshouses and chapel, located 140 metres north of Exeter Cathedral, comprise a scheduled ancient monument recording the physical consequences of Second World War aerial bombardment. The almshouses and associated chapel were established in the medieval period to provide accommodation and spiritual care for the poor and infirm of the cathedral parish. The remains visible today bear evidence of the extensive damage sustained during the Exeter Blitz of May 1942, which destroyed much of the medieval city centre. The site also encompasses the adjacent canon's house, a residential property associated with the cathedral establishment, whose fragmentary state similarly testifies to wartime destruction.
