The monument consists of a ditch with associated bank forming part of the longer Long Ditch system, a significant territorial boundary feature of Bronze Age date. The western section represents one of a series of fragmented surviving stretches of this important landscape division that once extended across the chalk downland. Such linear ditch systems served as stock boundaries and territorial markers during the Bronze Age period, reflecting patterns of land management and social organisation in prehistoric Wessex.
