History & significance

Bowl barrow in Normanton Gorse is a Bronze Age funerary monument forming part of the Normanton Down round barrow cemetery near Stonehenge in Wiltshire. The barrow is a bowl-shaped burial mound of characteristic Early Bronze Age form, constructed during the period approximately 2200 to 1500 BC when such monuments were erected across southern Britain. As part of the Normanton Down complex, which contains multiple burial mounds of varying types, the bowl barrow represents the funerary practices and ceremonial landscape of Bronze Age Wessex communities. The site remains a significant archaeological resource for understanding burial customs and settlement patterns in the region contemporary with Stonehenge's later phases of use.
