Bremenium is a Roman auxiliary fort situated at High Rochester in Northumberland, built during the 2nd century AD as part of the military infrastructure of Roman Britain. The fort was established to control and defend the Dere Street supply route running northwards into Scotland, and it remained an important garrison site during the later Roman period, with occupation continuing into the early 3rd century. The site preserves substantial earthwork remains, including the characteristic playing-card layout of Roman fort ditches and internal structures visible as cropmarks and ground features. Bremenium exemplifies the strategic deployment of auxiliary forces across the northern frontier of Roman Britain and provides important evidence for Roman military logistics and frontier management.
