Brinkburn Priory is an Augustinian priory founded in the 12th century in Northumberland, situated on the River Coquet in a secluded valley setting that exemplifies the monastic preference for remote riverine locations. The surviving structures include the priory church, which retains substantial Norman architectural elements, alongside post-Dissolution buildings that reflect the conversion of the site to secular use following the monasteries' suppression in the 1530s. The priory's watermill, powered by the Coquet, represents the economic infrastructure essential to monastic self-sufficiency, whilst the gatehouse and other stone structures demonstrate the physical extent and organisation of the establishment. The site was substantially restored in the 19th century, particularly the church, which has ensured the survival of important Romanesque features and made Brinkburn one of the more architecturally significant lesser monasteries in northern England.
