The Bronze Age cairnfield, prehistoric enclosure, Romano-British settlement and medieval shielings 500m south of Mounthooly is a multi-period archaeological complex in Northumberland demonstrating sustained human activity across more than two thousand years. The site comprises Bronze Age burial cairns, an Iron Age or Romano-British enclosed settlement, and later medieval pastoral structures, indicating continuity of land use from the second millennium BC through the medieval period. The cairnfield and enclosure remain visible as earthworks within the landscape, whilst the shielings represent seasonal pastoral occupation associated with transhumance practices in the medieval uplands. This layered occupation sequence makes the site significant for understanding prehistoric settlement patterns, Romano-British land organisation, and the development of pastoral agriculture in northern Britain.
