Overview

History & significance

Brougham Roman fort is a first-century Roman military installation situated in Westmorland at the confluence of the rivers Eamont and Lowther. Built around AD 90 as part of the Stanegate frontier system, the fort functioned as a significant garrison controlling the route north from the Pennines, with substantial remains of its stone and turf defences, internal buildings and vicus or civil settlement still evident in the landscape. The site was occupied intermittently through the third century before abandonment, leaving buried archaeological deposits and surface features that document Roman frontier occupation and civilian activity in the region. Brougham Castle, a Norman and medieval fortress constructed from the twelfth century onwards, stands in proximity to these Roman remains, its masonry tower and later additions demonstrating the continued strategic importance of this location from antiquity through the medieval period.
