Brougham Roman fort is a Romano-British military installation situated in Westmorland, positioned strategically on the River Eamont near the convergence of important routes linking the north of Roman Britain. Constructed in the second century AD, likely under Antoninus Pius, the fort housed auxiliary troops and served as a nodal point in Rome's control of the region, with evidence of occupation extending into the late Roman period. A substantial civil settlement developed outside the fort's defences, supporting the military garrison through commercial and domestic activity. The site later hosted a medieval castle, constructed by Robert de Clifford in the early fourteenth century, which overlies and incorporates some Roman structural elements, creating a complex palimpsest of defensive architecture spanning nearly two millennia.
