Overview

History & significance

Bugsworth Canal Basin is a complex of industrial heritage structures located near Chapel-en-le-Frith in Derbyshire, comprising a canal basin, tramway infrastructure, limestone quarry, and associated limekilns dating to the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The site represents the integrated industrial development of the Derbyshire Peak District, where limestone extraction was connected to transport networks that supplied lime and other materials to wider markets. The canal basin connected to the Peak Forest Canal, whilst the tramway facilitated movement of stone from the quarry workings to processing and distribution facilities. The limekilns, constructed to process the extracted limestone, demonstrate the vertical integration of quarrying, processing, and transport that characterised industrial limestone production during this period of rapid expansion in British transport infrastructure and chemical manufacture.
