Bulphan World War II bombing decoy is a scheduled ancient monument located approximately 850 to 890 metres south-west of Doesgate Farm in Essex. The site consists of a decoy installation constructed during the Second World War, forming part of the defensive infrastructure developed to protect industrial and strategic targets from aerial bombardment. Such decoys, known as "Q-sites" or "starfish" installations when designed to simulate towns and industrial areas, were deployed across Britain from 1940 onwards to divert enemy bombing away from genuine targets by mimicking the appearance of populated or industrialised zones from the air. The Bulphan installation represents an important example of civil defence measures undertaken during wartime and survives as physical evidence of mid-twentieth-century military strategy and engineering.
