Burgh by Sands Roman fort is a Roman military installation located in Cumberland on the Solway Firth coast, forming part of the western frontier system of Hadrian's Wall. The fort, known as Aballava in antiquity, dates to the second century AD and was constructed to control movement along the coastal route and across the Solway estuary during the Roman occupation of Britain. The site occupies a strategically positioned headland and formerly contained the typical structures of an auxiliary fort including barrack blocks, a headquarters building, and associated defensive works. The scheduled ancient monument extends across wall miles 70 and 71, encompassing the fort remains and the adjacent section of Hadrian's Wall running westward from the boundary near the churchyard to Burgh Head.
