Burgh Castle is a multi-period fortified site in Suffolk, England, which represents a sequence of significant military and religious occupation spanning the Roman period through the medieval era. The site originated as a Roman fort, likely constructed in the third century AD as part of the coastal defence system known as the Saxon Shore, and its substantial flint and stone walls remain amongst the most impressive Roman military architecture surviving in Britain. A civilian settlement or vicus developed adjacent to the fort, and following the Roman withdrawal the site was occupied as a pre-Conquest monastery, reflecting the early medieval religious use of former Roman fortifications. The Normans subsequently constructed a motte and bailey castle at the location, demonstrating the continued strategic value of this commanding position overlooking the River Waveney.
