Burton medieval village is a scheduled ancient monument in Westmorland comprising the earthwork remains of a medieval settlement with its associated open field system, fishponds and moated fishpond complex, alongside evidence of early post-medieval reorganisation of both village and fields. The site preserves substantial ridge and furrow cultivation patterns indicative of the communal arable farming practices characteristic of the medieval period, together with water management features including fishponds which served both practical and status-related functions within the settlement hierarchy. The survival of earthwork remains from successive phases of occupation and land use provides valuable archaeological evidence for understanding patterns of rural settlement and agrarian economy in the medieval and early post-medieval North of England. The monument demonstrates the physical legacy of a functioning medieval community and the subsequent transformations of its landscape during the early modern period.
