History & significance

Bushmead Priory is an Augustinian priory founded in the thirteenth century near Bushmead in Bedfordshire. The site is now represented principally by the remains of the priory church, which survives in fragmentary form, retaining elements of its medieval masonry and architectural detailing. The priory was dissolved during the Reformation in the sixteenth century, after which the buildings fell into disrepair, though portions of the structure have been preserved and conserved as a scheduled ancient monument. The surviving remains provide evidence of the religious and architectural practices of the medieval Augustinian order in the East Midlands region.
