Overview

History & significance

Caen Hill locks is a flight of sixteen locks constructed on the Kennet and Avon Canal in Wiltshire during the late eighteenth century, completed in 1810. The locks descend approximately seventy-six feet over a distance of about two thousand feet, making it one of the most impressive engineering achievements of the canal era and a remarkable example of hydraulic engineering by the canal's chief engineer, John Rennie. The flight was designed to overcome the steep gradient of Caen Hill near Devizes, and its construction required substantial earthworks and careful planning to manage water supply and control. The locks remain substantially intact and continue to function as part of the operational canal system, representing a significant monument to industrial heritage and Georgian-era civil engineering.
