Caerau Castle Mound is a motte of medieval date located in Breconshire, Wales. The monument comprises an earthwork mound characteristic of early Norman fortification, constructed to command the local landscape as part of the Anglo-Norman expansion into South Wales during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The site retains its distinctive raised platform form, representing a defensive settlement type typical of the period immediately following the Norman Conquest, when such simple yet effective fortifications were rapidly established throughout Wales to consolidate territorial control. Although the castle saw no substantial stone development, the mound itself remains a significant archaeological testimony to the military strategy and settlement patterns of medieval Breconshire.
