History & significance

Cairnfield is a complex Bronze Age ceremonial and agricultural landscape situated on moorland northwest of Newbridge Farm in Derbyshire. The site comprises a ring cairn together with an associated field system, representing evidence of settlement and land use during the later Bronze Age period. The ring cairn, a circular or near-circular mound of stones with a distinctive central depression or hollow, exemplifies funerary or ritual monuments common to upland regions of northern England during this era. The adjacent field system, defined by lynchets and boundary stones, demonstrates the organised agricultural exploitation of the moorland, with parallel trends of pastoral and arable farming documented across contemporary Bronze Age landscapes in the Peak District and surrounding areas.
