Cambodunum is a Roman fort and associated civilian settlement (vicus) located near Slack in West Yorkshire, situated in the Pennines along the line of the Roman road known as the Maiden Way. The fort was constructed during the early Roman period, likely in the first century AD, as part of the military infrastructure established to control the upland regions of northern Britain following the Roman conquest. The site comprises the remains of the fort itself, which would have accommodated auxiliary troops, together with the settlement that developed outside its walls to service the military garrison and facilitate trade. Archaeological investigation has revealed structural evidence and artefactual material consistent with a functioning Roman military establishment, though much of the site remains buried beneath the modern landscape.
