History & significance

Cardean is a Roman auxiliary fort located in Angus, Scotland, situated approximately 230 metres north-west of Cardean Mill. The fort dates to the Roman occupation of northern Britain, likely established during the Antonine period in the second century AD as part of the network of installations supporting Roman military operations in Scotland. Archaeological evidence indicates the fort was constructed to a standard playing-card plan and occupied a strategic position within the Tayside lowlands. The site, now largely buried, represents an important example of Roman frontier infrastructure in the far north of the empire.
