Castell Cynfal is a motte-and-bailey castle situated at Bryn Crug in Meirionnydd, Gwynedd, Wales. The site comprises an earthwork mound typical of Norman or early medieval defensive structures, representing the military architecture of the twelfth century or possibly earlier Welsh lordly strongholds. Located within the historic commote of Cymydmaen, the castle would have functioned as a focal point for territorial control in this region of north Wales. The monument survives today as an upstanding earthwork, though like many mottes of its period, its original superstructure and precise chronology remain subjects of archaeological study.
