Castle Hill is a motte castle located approximately 270 metres north-east of Rosemary Hall in Yorkshire. The monument consists of a substantial mound typical of Norman earthwork fortifications, representing the 11th or 12th-century period of motte and bailey castle construction in northern England. Such motte castles served as early medieval defensive strongholds and administrative centres for their lords, employing simple but effective raised earthwork design that could be constructed relatively quickly. The site's survival as an upstanding earthwork contributes to the archaeological understanding of Norman settlement and military strategy in the Yorkshire landscape.
