Overview

History & significance

Castle Hill is a complex ancient monument in Yorkshire comprising multiple phases of fortification and settlement spanning several centuries. The site exhibits a univallate hillfort of Iron Age date, overlain by a small multivallate hillfort of probable later prehistoric origin, demonstrating successive defensive refortification of the location. A motte and bailey castle was subsequently constructed at the summit during the medieval period, representing the Norman or early post-Conquest phase of settlement hierarchy. Associated with this medieval occupation is evidence of a deserted village, indicating substantial domestic settlement around the castle which was later abandoned, leaving the earthworks as the primary surviving record of these layered phases of human occupation and defence.
