Overview

History & significance

Castle Rising is a Norman castle and adjacent church complex located in Norfolk, England, comprising one of the most substantial surviving examples of 11th-century military architecture in East Anglia. The castle was founded in the early 1140s by William d'Aubigny II, a powerful Norman magnate, and features a massive square keep surrounded by substantial earthwork defences that survive prominently to the present day. The keep itself, built of flint and stone, stands approximately 21 metres high and exemplifies the robust military engineering characteristic of the Norman period, with its distinctive pilaster buttresses and decorative arcading visible on the outer walls. Adjacent to the castle stands St Lawrence's Church, a fine Romanesque structure of 12th-century date, which retains significant original Norman architectural features including its richly decorated west front with intersecting arcading and carved detailing.
