Castle Sween is a substantial stone castle of twelfth-century origin situated on the Kintyre peninsula in Argyllshire, Scotland, representing one of the earliest castles built in the Scottish Highlands. The castle comprises a roughly rectangular curtain wall of rubble masonry with corner towers, constructed in a style characteristic of the Romanesque period and likely commissioned by the Norse-Gaelic lords who controlled the region. Though substantially ruined, the surviving walls and structural remains demonstrate the military and domestic ambitions of its medieval builders, and the site has undergone phases of occupation and modification extending into the seventeenth century. Castle Sween occupies a strategic position overlooking Loch Sween and would have served as an important seat of power controlling maritime and terrestrial routes in the Hebridean region during the medieval period.
