Catherine Lodge is a Roman settlement and field system located in Midlothian, Scotland, extending across approximately 380 metres from north-north-west to south-east. The site sits upon bedrock of the Scottish Coal Measures Group, formed during the Moscovian period and comprising mudstone, siltstone, sandstone, coal, ironstone and ferricrete. This underlying geology shaped both the landscape and the practicalities of Roman occupation in this part of southern Scotland.
The settlement represents evidence of Roman agricultural activity and land organisation during the period of Roman interest in Scotland, with the associated field system indicating structured use of the surrounding landscape. The survival of both settlement remains and field boundaries across the site provides insight into how Romans adapted to and exploited this upland terrain.
