Overview

History & significance

Cefn Mawr Hut Group is a prehistoric hut circle settlement located in Wales. The site comprises the remains of multiple circular dwellings that date to the Bronze Age, representing a typical upland settlement pattern of that period. Such communities were commonly established on higher ground where natural resources and pastoral opportunities were readily available.

The settlement sits upon bedrock comprising Llanvirn Rocks—undifferentiated mudstone, siltstone and sandstone formed during the Whiterock period of the Ordovician. This geology would have provided limited level building ground, requiring inhabitants to work with the natural contours and available stone for their structures. The exposed and weathered state of the bedrock across the site today reflects both the passage of millennia and the exposure that early inhabitants would have experienced.

The hut circles themselves represent domestic structures typical of Bronze Age upland settlement, where families maintained small pastoral units. The site is now protected by Cadw under reference CN200, ensuring its preservation as an important archaeological record of prehistoric land use and settlement patterns in the Welsh landscape.
