Charlemont Fort is a post-medieval artillery fortification located in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, constructed during the late sixteenth century as part of the English Crown's military infrastructure in Ulster. The fort was strategically positioned to control the River Blackwater and served as a garrison to secure English authority in the region during a period of significant political instability and resistance to English rule. Built to accommodate artillery, the fortification exhibits the characteristic trace italienne design typical of early modern military architecture, with angled bastions engineered to provide overlapping fields of fire and defend against cannon assault. The site represents an important example of Elizabethan military expansion in Ireland and remains a substantial surviving example of late Tudor fortification strategy in the province.
