Overview

History & significance

Charlestown Limekilns is a complex of industrial lime-burning structures located in Fife, Scotland, dating principally to the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The site comprises multiple limekilns, associated calcining features, and related infrastructure that served the substantial lime-production industry which developed in the area during the post-medieval period. The kilns represent the technological and commercial development of lime manufacturing in Scotland during an era of significant industrial expansion, when lime produced at such coastal sites was essential for agricultural improvement, building mortar, and other industrial applications. The physical remains at Charlestown preserve evidence of the working practices and scale of operation characteristic of Scottish limekilns during this period of intensive development.
