History & significance

Coal and Iron Ore Workings West of Abergavenny Road, Blaenavon is a Post-Medieval and Modern industrial site comprising mining remains associated with the extensive iron and coal extraction operations that characterised the Blaenavon area from the late eighteenth century onwards. The workings represent the physical legacy of the region's role as a major centre of iron production during the Industrial Revolution, when local ore deposits and coal seams were systematically exploited to supply the blast furnaces and forges that made Blaenavon one of Wales's most important industrial settlements. The site contains surface features typical of nineteenth-century mineral extraction, including evidence of pit workings, spoil heaps, and associated mining infrastructure.
