Coats Hill is a medieval motte situated approximately 480 metres north-east of St Margaret's in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. The monument represents a typical example of the motte form of fortification, which became prevalent in Scotland during the Norman period and the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The earthwork consists of a raised mound characteristic of this defensive settlement type, which would originally have supported timber or stone structures on its summit. Such mottes served as local administrative and defensive centres for feudal lords and their territories during the medieval period.
