Cocklawfoot is a post-medieval farmstead and settlement situated in Roxburghshire, some 500 metres north-east of the named location. The site comprises the farmstead buildings themselves along with associated field systems characteristic of agricultural settlement from the 16th century onwards. The landscape upon which Cocklawfoot was established rests on Silurian to Devonian bedrock composed of mafic lava and mafic tuff, extrusive volcanic rocks that form the underlying geology of this part of the Scottish Borders.
The settlement represents the type of dispersed rural habitation typical of post-medieval Roxburghshire, where individual farms operated as economic and social units within the agricultural landscape. The field systems surrounding the farmstead reflect the productive use of the land during this period, organised according to the farming practices and land tenure arrangements of the time.
