Overview

History & significance

Corfe Castle is a large enclosure castle situated near the village of Corfe in Dorset, England, with origins in the Norman period following the conquest of 1066. The castle occupies a naturally defensive hilltop position and comprises substantial stone walls and towers arranged within its principal enclosure, substantially rebuilt and reinforced during the 12th and 13th centuries. The castle was severely damaged during the English Civil War when it was slighted by Parliamentary forces in 1646, resulting in the dramatic fragmentary ruins visible today. The 18th-century Vineyard Bridge, associated with the castle, represents post-medieval infrastructure and reflects the site's continued occupation and use during the early modern period.
